A noteworthy feature in the layout of the town of Ponchatoula is that it’s cross-shaped, divided into four quadrants by the intersection of the north-south railroad and the east-west LA 22. In each quadrant are large public spaces – the baseball field in the Northeast, the two neighboring schools in the Southeast, Kiawanis/Trasker Chapel Park in the Southwest and Memorial Park in the Northwest. What or who is remembered at Memorial Park isn’t outwardly apparent but it probably involves the aftermath of warfare.
Memorial Park is best known far and wide as the centerpiece of the town’s big Strawberry Festival event held each spring wherein the whole town goes nuts for a long weekend.
